CLASSES TAUGHT AT THE BETTY J. PULLUM FAMILY YMCA
Classes in several martial arts are offered by the staff at the Navarre Martial Arts Club.
Shibumi-do (the Way of Elegant Simplicity) Karate. It is an eclectic mix of traditional Shotokan
and modern kata developed by Sensei Whitmer and is geared to give students the competitive edge at local,
national and international level competition.
Chen style T'ai Chi Ch'uan is also known as moving meditation and is a Chinese system of empty hand and weapons
forms designed to enhance the students flexibility, strength and overall mental health. The deceptively soft and
flowing movements harbor much power that becomes apparent to the student as their training progresses.
TaeKwonDO using the patterns techniques of ITF Taekwon-Do as originally created by it’s Founder, General Choi Hong Hi.
, characterized by it's fast, high and spinning kicks.
Sparring (Kumite) is also covered, giving the student a real
edge in the ring.
Okinawan Kobudo curriculum covers the well known weapons-the bo stafff, nunchaku, sai, and
kama, and some other not so well known but equally interesting and intriguing devices.
Japanese swordsmanship and Kobudo is an integral component of this class, from the traditions of Itto-Ryu school founded in the year
832 AD to the more modern techniques of American Kenjutsu. Practical applicatons in the form of Chanbara training
and Kendo are a regular part of the training experience.
Goshin-Jutsu our self defense progam is developed over
literally decades of police, military and martial arts experience and is constantly updated by our staff to meet
the needs of personal defense in the real world. The student not only receives a well-rounded base of techniques
to protect themselves and their loved ones but a working knowledge of the law as it pertains to self protection.
Chanbara Over thirty years ago Japanese martial artists and sword masters created
a better training style for the next millennium. The founder,
Tanabe Tetsundo with some of the strongest martial artists in Japan called this
new school of thought Goshindo, later nicknamed Chanbara.
These martial artists and masters were very traditional. They also knew
that the times were changing and decided to educate today's public in the
way of the modern Japanese Samurai.
New materials made out of flexible plastics and the constant refining of swords
for combat in the 21st century proved to be a stroke of genius.
Not only is Chanbara fast, but also heavy and cumbersome protective equipment
is not needed.
The Japanese public immediately embraced this new full-contact combative sport
allowing it to be a member of the Japanese Department of Education.
Moreover, instructors began to notice a considerable difference in the way
the student's motor skills and reflexes improved. Chanbara had easily done
in hours what traditional polishing techniques took months and even years
to perfect.
From ages 4 to 104, Chanbara has something for every one. Chanbara is great for
children to burn off extra energy 2~3 times a week.
Young adults have "Chanbara fun" while practicing their instructor's techniques.
Weekend warriors are able to cut away extra pounds and slash stress levels down to size.
Of course, Chanbara is also for the dedicated martial artist who
wants to exchange and match wits in the ultimate physical game of chess.
We were the first in this area to offer Chanbara, and even the use of covered weapons.
